WLAN problems can come in a variety of forms. From simple interference from sources which disrupt the signal across the airwaves, to problems with the router, firmware and software, and even access to files. All of these could be eliminated or at least reduced with a good WLAN management system. As efficient and convenient as WLAN networks are, as with any computer systems there may be minor hiccups along the way which need sorting out in order to maintain proficiency. A good network administration role will be important in the office setup, but at home it can be an interesting and rewarding topic to learn up on. The ability to control, tweak and update your network can be an exciting challenge. One of the main WLAN problems which are raised, is that of security. Even though the purpose of the connection is to provide accessibly to a number of workstations from just one Ethernet connection, wireless networks are seen as a lot more prone to attacks than wired LAN connections. With wired LAN connections, any hacker would need some physical contact with the systems, whereas the equivalent wireless connection is floating around the airwaves and able to be detected even outside of buildings where they are used. Making sure firewalls, passwords, file authorizations and encryptions are secure, will help protect your packets of data as they are transmitted. Interference is another one of the main WLAN problems. Wireless connections will operate on either one of two standards, and these are 802.11a (5 GHz) and 802.11g (2.4 GHz). These will determine the range of frequency which is being broadcast, but as with any signals being sent over radio signals, there is the possibility of interference. Interference mainly comes from other devices, and two of the most notorious ones which affect a wireless network, especially the 802.11g standard are older microwaves and cordless telephones. If you are finding problems with interference, then switching to the other standard may help, or trying to pinpoint the source of the interference and eliminating it will help, such as cell phones with Bluetooth activated. Other WLAN problems can come from software failures and hardware conflicts. If you run your network from a main server, you will be able to maintain the entire network from this one location. This adds a great deal of efficiency as can simultaneously update everything across the network at once. It is good to have such a system in place, and automate as many updates to software and hardware as you can. Not keeping up to date with patches, drivers and firmware, can lead to a less than efficient network system.
